Broderick Family Tree

In this post, I'm going to focus on Patrick McGlew's wife, Winefred (Broderick) McGlew, and her family tree.  I have limited information on the Broderick line, but hope to eventually delve back further, if at all possible.

Patrick McGlew's wife, Winefred Broderick, was born to Samuel and Eleanor (also known as Ellen) Egan in Newfoundland, in either 1820 or 1821.    I've also seen her given name writen in public records as "Winifred," Winnifred," and "Winnefred," and her surname as "Brodric" and "Brodrick."  She married Patrick McGlew on October 8, 1842 in Newburyport, MA.

Winefred and Patrick had six children together between 1845 and 1859. Hugh (b. 1845), Samuel (b. 1846), Jeremiah (b. 1848, and passed away in 1855, at age 6), Eleanor (b. 1851), Anna (b. 1857), and Jeremiah Thomas (b. 1859, our direct ancestor).

Her husband and two teenaged sons, Hugh and Samuel, all enlisted in 1861 to fight for the Union in the Civil War.  While both of her sons survived the war, Patrick never came home.  He passed away in New Orleans from dysentery on July 23, 1862.

Winefred passed away from pneumonia/influenza on Feb 8, 1905, in Rowley, MA.

Winifred's father, Samuel Broderick (also found spelled as "Brodric") was born around 1798 in Newfoundland, Canada.  There is some speculation, as of yet unverified, that Samuel may have lived for a period of time in Harbour Grace and/or Carbonear, Newfoundland.

He married Eleanor/Ellen Egan (b. aprox 1803), and later emigrated to America with his family sometime between 1832 and 1841.  Samuel passed away from consumption in Newburyport, MA, on January 31, 1852, at age 54.  I have been unable as of yet to find any more information on his wife Eleanor, other than that she was still living in Newburyport MA with her daughters Ann and Frances as of the 1855 Massachusetts State Census.
